Professor George Athwal

Dr. George Athwal is originally from Vancouver, and completed his M.D. at the University of British Columbia. Following completion of his orthopedic surgery residency at Queen’s University, he spent 2 years sub-specializing in upper extremity reconstruction and trauma.

Dr. Athwal completed a 1-year fellowship at the Hospital for Special Surgery, Cornell University, New York, NY. Following this, he completed 1-year at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN specializing in shoulder and elbow surgery. In 2005, he joined the Hand and Upper Limb Centre at the University of Western Ontario. He is actively involved in biomechanical and clinical research pertaining to the shoulder and elbow. Dr Athwal has been awarded the Dean’s Award of Excellence for his research contributions to the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry, the Clinician Scientist Award from the Department of Surgery, a Career Development Award from AMOSO and the H.S. Cameron Teaching Award. Additionally, he has represented the Canadian Orthopaedic Association as a North American Travelling Fellow and has also represented the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons as a European Travelling Fellow. 

Dr Athwal has published over 300 scientific articles and 50 book chapters and is an Associate Editor for the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery and Clinics in Shoulder & Elbow. He is the past president of the Association of Clinical Elbow and Shoulder Surgeons (ACESS) and is on the executive board for the American Shoulder & Elbow Surgeons (ASES) and for the Canadian Shoulder & Elbow Society (CSES). Dr Athwal has also founded and co-chairs his own conference on shoulder replacement surgery, entitled the Advanced Shoulder ArthroPlasty (ASAP) meeting, which occurs biennially at the Snowbird Resort, Utah, USA.  Furthermore, he has been recognized by his peers as a leader in shoulder surgery.

Dr. Athwal’s elective practice involves all aspects of shoulder surgery, including primary & revision shoulder joint replacement, arthroscopic rotator cuff repair, instability surgery and arthroscopic elbow surgery. Dr. Athwal’s trauma practice focuses on injuries involving the shoulder and upper extremity.


Mr Stephen Bale

Mr Stephen Bale is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in shoulder and elbow surgery in Lancashire at Renacres Hospital and Fulwood Hall Hospital.

Mr Steve Bale is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in conditions affecting the shoulder. In addition to arthroscopic day case surgery for impingement, instability, rotator cuff disease, sports injuries, dislocations, fractures, and frozen shoulder.His main interest is in arthritis of the shoulder and performs shoulder replacement surgery for osteoarthritis, rheumatoid and rotator cuff related degenerative disease. His research interests revolve mainly around the surgical management of glenoid deficiency in arthroplasty surgery and prosthetic joint infection.


Dr. Patrick Denard, MD

Dr. Denard is recognized as one of the top shoulder surgeons in the United States. He has been voted one of the top 20 shoulder surgeons in North America. In 2021, The National Library of Medicine’s Expert scape ranked Patrick Denard, MD, #2 for rotator cuff repair and #17 in shoulder replacement expertise worldwide based on his research publications.

Clinically, Dr. Denard has performed over 7,000 shoulder surgeries. He specializes in management of arthroscopic, or minimally invasive, management of shoulder conditions. He uses and has developed techniques that allow him to repair tears that some consider “irreparable.” He also performs anatomic and reverse shoulder replacements for shoulder arthritis. With a comprehensive approach to management nearly 90% of his patients who have a shoulder replacement go home the same day, which is one of the lowest length of stay rates in the United States.

In addition to his surgical expertise, Dr. Denard is at the forefront of advancing the field of shoulder surgery with continual research. With over 200 peer-reviewed publications to date, Dr. Denard is the most widely published shoulder surgeon in Oregon and one of the top contributors in the globe. He is also the co-author of two textbooks on shoulder surgery: “The Cowboy’’s Companion: A Trail Guide for the Arthroscopic Shoulder Surgeon” and “The Cowboy’s Conundrum: Complex and Advanced Cases in Shoulder Arthroscopy”.

In addition to his position at Oregon Shoulder Institute, Dr. Denard has academic appointments as Clinical Associate Professor with the Washington State University Department of Medical Education and Clinical Sciences and Instructor at Oregon Health & Science University.

Outside of work Dr. Denard enjoys spending time with his wife and two children, playing golf, being a part of the local community, and living in his native state of Oregon.


Dr. Graham King

Dr. Graham JW King received his MD degree at the University of British Columbia.

After completing a rotating internship at the University of Alberta he went to the University of Toronto to train in orthopaedic surgery. During a research year in Toronto he became interested in orthopaedic biomechanics and soft tissue healing. After qualifying as an orthopaedic surgeon in 1989 he completed a clinical fellowship in hand and wrist surgery and a Masters of Science degree at the University of Calgary. He then travelled to the Mayo Clinic to gain further clinical experience in wrist and elbow surgery and additional research experience in upper extremity bioengineering. In 1992 he joined the Department of Surgery at the University of Western Ontario. He established the Bioengineering Laboratory at the Hand and Upper Limb Centre at St. Joseph’s Health Centre. With his collaborators he has developed strong linkages with the Departments of Medical Biophysics and Mechanical Engineering. Over the past 30 years the laboratory has been successful in attracting extensive peer review funding including CIHR, CAS, CAN and NSERC and has numerous industry collaborations. His current research interests focus on the biomechanics of the wrist and elbow as well as computer and image guided surgery.

He has received the Premier’s Research Excellence Award from the Government of Ontario and the J. Edouard Samson Research Award from the Canadian Orthopaedic Research Society. He has represented the Canadian Orthopaedic Association as a North American Travelling Fellow and an American, British and Canadian Travelling Fellow. He has also served as the president of the Canadian Orthopaedic Research Society. He is currently a Professor in the Departments of Surgery, Medical Biophysics and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Western Ontario, Chief of Surgery and Director of the Roth McFarlane Hand and Upper Limb Centre at St. Joseph’s Health Centre.


John W. Sperling, MD, MBA

John W. Sperling MD, MBA is Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. 

Dr. Sperling completed his residency at Mayo Clinic and a fellowship in Sports Medicine and Shoulder Surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery.  His primary clinical and research interest is primary and revision shoulder arthroplasty.
