As part of the SCL Conference, we are pleased to offer the opportunity to participate in two site visits on local projects of significance. Both projects relate to the Wellington City Council’s Civic Precinct and involve significant strengthening and refurbishment work. Further details will be provided when registrations for conference open.
Te Whare Whakarauika, the Wellington Town Hall
The Wellington Town Hall is a grade one listed heritage building and is nearly 120 years old. It has been closed to the public since 2013, when it was deemed earthquake prone. The Town Hall, one of the city’s most important heritage buildings, was resting on its original unreinforced concrete piles on reclaimed land. The Council has been reconstructing and redeveloping the building since 2019, to make it resilient and meet current earthquake standards.

Te Matapihi ki te Ao Nui, our Central Library
Te Matapihi will be a space for everyone, with each experience opening a window to knowledge and connection, and a sense of belonging. Wellingtonians love their libraries, and Te Matapihi Central Library has a special place in their hearts. That’s why the Council confirmed in 2020 that the building would be remediated to the highest standard (base isolation), following its closure to the public in March 2019.
In 2020, work began on the future for Te Matapihi. This process involved consultation with the Wellington public, including mana whenua, and many other key stakeholders and partners. Due to open in 2026 the library involves strengthening, refurbishment and expansion work.
